Identifying Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) involves looking for persistent patterns in two main areas: social communication and repetitive behaviors.

1. Core Signs

  • Social Challenges: Difficulty reading social cues (sarcasm, body language), inconsistent eye contact, or trouble maintaining “back-and-forth” conversation.
  • Repetitive Behaviors: Repetitive physical movements (stimming), a strict need for routines, or intense, highly focused “special interests.”
  • Sensory Processing: Over- or under-sensitivity to sounds, lights, textures, or smells.

2. Professional Diagnosis

There is no medical test (like a blood test) for autism. Professionals use:

  • Developmental History: Reviewing milestones and childhood behaviors.
  • Standardized Tools: Such as the ADOS-2 (observation) or the ADI-R (interview).
  • Clinical Evaluation: Performed by a neuropsychologist, psychiatrist, or developmental pediatrician.

3. Why It Matters

Identification is about understanding how the brain processes information. It provides:

  • Clarity: Explains why certain environments or social tasks feel draining.
  • Support: Access to therapy (OT, Speech), school accommodations, or workplace adjustments.
  • Community: Connection with others who share a similar “neurotype.”

Vital Note: Autism is a spectrum. One person may be non-verbal and require 24/7 care, while another may be a high-achieving professional who simply struggles with social exhaustion.

Give A Voice To Students With Autism

Help Empower Young Authors To Share Their Stories! Every child has a story to tell — but for many students with autism, expressing their voice can be a challenge.Through the “Voices of Autism” book publishing initiative, we help students with autism write, illustrate, and publish their very own books — giving them the confidence and platform to be heard.
